Nervous System
The nervous system is the main control center for the entire body. It functions to initiate and coordinate movement, interpret sensory stimuli, and monitor organs. The nervous system is often broadly divided into two categories: Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system while most of the other nerves belong to the peripheral nervous system.
Peripheral nerves provide communication between the central nervous system and organs such as the skeletal muscle, skin, the heart, and the gastrointestinal tract. Communication throughout the nervous system is based on transmission of electrochemical signals which are passed among nerve cells, neurons.
Injury to the peripheral nerves can cause interruption of the signals between the CNS and the target organs. If unrepaired, there can be permanent loss of motor and/or sensory function.
